Kim Mulkey is upgrading her coaching staff after this year’s Elite Eight exit.

LSU announced on Monday that Seimone Augustus is joining Mulkey’s staff as an assistant coach. Augustus will fill the position that was recently vacated by the retirement of Johnny Derrick.

The 40-year-old Augustus was an icon for LSU, her alma mater. She played for them from 2002-06, winning two Naismith Player of the Year Awards and leading the team to three consecutive Final Four berths.

Augustus later had her No. 33 jersey retired by LSU and was also eventually honored with a statue on the school’s campus.

After her college career, Augustus starred in the WNBA. She was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2006 WNBA Draft and went on to make eight All-Star teams, earn six All-WNBA selections, and win four championships (all with the Minnesota Lynx).

After retiring as a player in 2021, Augustus became an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Sparks from 2021-22.

As for LSU, they won the national title in 2023 but failed to defend their crown this year and also sparked controversy during their tournament run

The return of Augustus, who is perhaps the single greatest player in program history, should help the Tigers get back on track heading into 2024-25.
